FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA (February 1, 2016) – The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra has announced four finalists in the search for its next Music Director.
The finalists, selected from more than 120 applications, are Darko Butorac of Missoula, Montana; Charles Latshaw of Kent, Ohio; Daniel O’Bryant of Flagstaff; and Lidiya Yankovskaya of New York City. Each finalist will spend a week in Flagstaff to rehearse and conduct a concert with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra (FSO) in the 2016-2017 season.
“I am very excited for our northern Arizona community to meet each of these candidates for the Music Director position. They are all fine musicians and experienced conductors,” said FSO Executive Director Christopher Barton.
A search committee was formed in August 2015 to identify the next Music Director of the FSO. The committee is chaired by Stan Sutherland of the FSO Board of Directors and consists of FSO musicians, board members, and leaders from the community. “We have a great committee working collegially and efficiently for the success of our search,” said Sutherland. “The quality of our applicant pool was outstanding, especially these finalists that our committee identified.”
Current Artistic Director and Conductor of the FSO, Elizabeth Schulze, announced in June 2015 that she would conclude her tenure in 2017 after nine seasons with the orchestra. Schulze will conduct the opening and closing concerts of the 2016-2017 season.
“We are anticipating an emotional and memorable 2016-2017 season as we celebrate Maestra Schulze’s great work and identify her successor,” said FSO Board President Molly Munger.
Financial support for the search process is being provided through sponsorship by the law firm of Aspey, Watkins, & Diesel. “The Flagstaff Symphony is a treasured institution in our community and it requires the very best artistic leadership,” said Whitney Cunningham, the firm’s managing partner. “For this reason, AWD Law is proud to sponsor FSO in the search for its next music director.”
All FSO concerts in the 2016-17 season will be performed in Ardrey Memorial Auditorium on the Northern Arizona University campus on Friday evenings at 7:30pm. Concert dates and programs will be announced later in the spring.
